CSUMB magnet for applicants

Monterey Herald 1/21/07

CSU-Monterey Bay has become chic.

Administrators report that applications had risen to 6,247 by the end of December. The 21 percent increase far exceeds the system-wide average of 6 percent.

"We've directed our resources toward enrollment management," said CSUMB President Dianne Harrison. "Our staff has just been working incredibly hard to make sure that we're doing the kinds of things a university does to attract students." At CSUMB, that means reviewing applications quickly and staying in touch with applicants.

Harrison said increased enrollment is among her top priorities.

"The real test is in the yield factor," Harrison said. "How many applications can we turn into enrolled students?"

California State University officials also reported gains statewide in applications from Latino and black students.

Applications for Latino students have increased 15 percent, from 104,000 to 120,000, and applications for black students have increased 12 percent, from 27,000 to 31,000.

Specific numbers of applicants from among minority students at CSUMB were not available Friday.

State university officials has been actively promoting system campuses, said Paul Browning, a spokesman for the system.

"It is a very competitive world for universities," Harrison said. "A campus has to be much more aggressive and that is what I think we've been doing."
