Cal Poly custodian arrested for allegedly trying to hit coworker with car
SLO Tribune 1/12/07
University Police Chief Bill Watton said it appeared that James Reynolds, 59, “intended to do major injuries or death,” when he allegedly used his private car to run over a coworker in a parking lot behind the police department on campus.
The employee was able to jump out of the way, though he was bruised, Watton said.
Officers spotted the vehicle and followed Reynolds, who briefly tried to get away by turning off his headlights. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a weapon (both felonies) for having a machete on the seat next to him, as well as for reckless driving Watton said.
Reynolds is being held in County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
The university did not release the employee’s name, citing personnel reasons. He is a facility services employee, Watton said. It’s not known what led up to the incident, he said.
Watton didn’t know how longer either employee has worked on campus. Cal Poly spokeswoman Stacia Momburg said that police and DMV background checks are completed on all facility services employees.
