Cal State East Bay hosts African American summit

San Francisco Business Times 2/23/07

Following last weekend's "Super Sunday" outreach to the black community around the East Bay, California State University, East Bay, will host the African American Education Summit Feb. 24.

Both events are designed to encourage a larger number of young blacks to enroll at Cal State East Bay and other California State University campuses. The summit will be held at the New University Union at the Hayward campus of Cal State East Bay from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is co-sponsored by Cal State East Bay and the Oakland African American Chamber of Commerce.

Sandre Swanson, D-Oakland, a new member of the California State Assembly, will be keynote speaker at the event. Panel discussions will cover such topics as parental involvement, student life on campus, the college admissions process, and how to finance a college education through grants, scholarships and financial aid.

During the second annual Super Sunday Feb. 18, college officials attended church services throughout the East Bay to encourage a greater number of black students to attend college.

This Saturday's summit is similar to the Jan. 27 Latino Education Summit held on the campus that served as an outreach to the area's Latino community.
