CSU brass recruiting in black churches

San Francisco Chronicle 2/15/07

California State University Chancellor Charles Reed and several CSU campus presidents, including Robert Corrigan of San Francisco State, will address congregations at 17 predominantly African American churches Sunday in the Bay Area to highlight the importance of parental involvement and early preparation in getting to college.

The event, "CSU Super Sunday," is part of a statewide campaign by the CSU officials to encourage more minority students to go to college. After the services, CSU outreach directors and church education advisers will provide information on financial aid and the application and admission process.

A similar event last year was credited with helping increase the number of CSU applications from African American students by 12 percent for fall 2007. But more work needs to be done, Reed said.

"Of students currently enrolled at the CSU, approximately 8 percent are African American, which is deplorably low for such a large and diverse university system," Reed said.

Reed will speak at Acts Full Gospel Church of God and Christ at 1034 66th Ave. in Oakland during the 11:30 a.m. services.

Corrigan will speak at Providence Baptist Church at 1601 McKinnon St. in San Francisco at 8 a.m. and 10:45 a.m.
