Governor Schwarzenegger Announces Appointments

Roberta Achtenberg, 56, of San Francisco, has been appointed to the California State University Board of Trustees. She has served on the Board of Trustees since she was first appointed in 1999 and has served as chair since 2006. Achtenberg also has served as a workforce and economic development consultant for Lennar Communities Incorporated since 1998. Previously, she was senior vice president of public policy for the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce from 1997 to 2005 and senior advisor to the secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development from 1996 to 1997. Achtenberg is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Bank of San Francisco. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Achtenberg is a Democrat.

Peter Mehas, 67, of Fresno, has been appointed to the California State University Board of Trustees. He most recently served as the superintendent of schools for Fresno County from 1990 to 2006. Previously, Mehas was chief advisor on education matters and director of the Governor’s Office of Education Planning and Policy Committee for Governor Deukmejian from 1987 to 1990. From 1992 to 1993, he served on the State Board of Education. He has extensive public education experience including serving as deputy superintendent of Clovis Unified School District, principal of Clovis High School and teacher at Edison and Roosevelt High Schools. Mehas was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to the Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans in 1991. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Mehas is a Republican.
