CSUB considers increasing campus security

KGET-17, 4/24/07

In light of the Virginia Tech shootings, Cal State Bakersfield officials are considering stepping up security on campus, and that means three new measures could become a reality.

Most of the talk on campus Monday was about one of those three measures that could give campus police officers access to high-powered rifles to target suspects from long distances.

Cal State students could soon see stepped up security and students there have mixed reactions.

"It's kind of scary honestly to be walking around campus and see a cop with a big rifle," said one student. "I feel that's a good tactic to help the people feel safe here at Cal State."

University officers are certified and currently carry 9 mm. Glock handguns.

"There are several things on the table as far as security measures go," said Jaclyn Loveless, CSUB's public affairs officer. "One is possibility of officers having tactical rifles. That's just a proposal."

A behavior risk assessment team is another part of the proposal. Staff members from all over campus would make up the team in hopes of preventing a crisis.

"If a student went to a professor and said this student is acting strange they would have a place to go and the group would asses the situation," said Loveless.

Sophomore Joseph Davis said he is not willing to take part.

"I can see them doing that and looking out for the wellbeing of others is always a good thing," he said. "It doesn't seem that bad."

Officials are also considering a new alarm system on campus, but as of Monday, there was no timetable for the potential changes.

"Dr. Mitchell and campus police are taking ideas and suggestions and we are looking into doing that as soon as possible but all of these things have to be taken in great measure and consideration," said Loveless.

After four years at Cal State, senior Kiley Hall may never see the enhancements, but said she will graduate with confidence in current security.

"I feel pretty safe," said Hall. "There are campus student officers who provide escort services to students who don't feel safe walking from class to their cars at night."
