CSU students rally against fee increasee

KGET-17, 4/19/07

Cal State Bakersfield students rallied Wednesday against student fee increases at the university.

“We don’t want another 10 percent fee increase,” said one student. “We are already having trouble paying for books and our education right now,” said rally organizer Erica Hernandez.

CSU students will pay 10 percent more beginning in the fall for the 2007 and 2008 school year.

That means that an undergrad student taking more than six units will be paying an additional $250.

Hernandez said it’s already hard for students to pay for college expenses and this will make it even harder.

"A lot of students are paying for their own education,” Hernandez said, “and we can't afford another 10% fee hike. It's getting harder and harder for us to come and get a higher education. When back in the 1960's, a higher education was promised to students to be affordable and accessible for students that wanted to go into the CSU system and slowly that's being taken away from us."

Students had the chance to sign a petition at Wednesday’s rally.

The CSU Board of Trustees approved the fee increase last month.

The increase could be reversed if the state legislature can find a way to provide additional funding.
