Santa Cruz Sentinel 10-14-04 Public gets first peek at UCSC growth plan |

The community at large will have an opportunity to see the first draft of a long-awaited development plan for the UC Santa Cruz campus at an off-campus workshop Oct. 20. This is the only meeting scheduled on the draft plan. It will be from 6-9 p.m. at the University Inn Sierra Room, 611 Ocean Street. The campus of 15,000 students is in the middle of a multi-year process to write a plan for physical development through the year 2020. The draft plan aims to accommodate an average annual enrollment of 21,000 students. Consultants from Cooper, Robertson & Partners of New York and campus planners will provide an overview of the plan, which was distributed Oct. 6 to campus and community members on the planning committee. Among the key elements: Providing housing for 50 percent of undergraduates, 25 percent of graduate students, 25 percent of faculty and 3 percent of staff. Land to house up to 70 percent of undergraduates has been identified for student use if requested. Minimizing single-occupant vehicles traveling to and within the campus, with slightly more parking than the plan the Regents approved in 1989. Identifying the Cowell Ranch Historic District site at the base of campus. The final draft is expected to be finished in December; then a yearlong environmental impact study will take place. The final plan and its environmental review will likely reach the UC Regents in early 2006. Vice chancellor Tom Vani said the adopted plan will not be a mandate
for campus growth but provide a framework for capital construction, infrastructure
and land-use programs.
