The Press-Enterprise/5-4-04 Editorial: Success 101 |
|
|
In a world of disappointing numbers, here are some data to appreciate: Nearly 25 percent of graduate students at Cal State San Bernardino are Hispanic. That's a testament not to political correctness but to hard work and educational mobility. It offers encouragement to all groups in our communities to thrive academically, which in turn helps our region prosper broadly. The journal Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education said the 1-in-4 ratio gives Cal State San Bernardino the 12th-highest percentage of Hispanic students enrolled in graduate programs nationwide. It's a tribute to the diligence of the region's young scholars, many of whom completed undergraduate degrees at the San Bernardino campus before pursuing postgraduate studies. And it's a credit to CSUSB President President Al Karnig. It might seem natural that the state with the largest Hispanic population would enroll the most Hispanic graduate students. But San Bernardino students credit the school's accessible faculty, and its flexible class schedule, in accommodating Hispanic students who may be juggling classes, work and family obligations. CSU San Bernardino has drafted an educational success story. It would be great to see universities elsewhere take note. |
