San Francisco Chronicle 5-13-04 S.F. State students walk out in protest |
|
| An estimated 800 students walked out of classes and staged a noisy demonstration at San Francisco State University on Wednesday to protest sweeping cuts in higher education proposed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The student walkout, planned for a week as part of a statewide student protest, came a day after the governor and leaders of the University of California and the California State University systems agreed to a six-year budget deal. That compact, which must be approved by the Legislature, would set minimum funding levels and increase student fees over the next three school years. The protest began at about 10 a.m. at the campus quad, followed by a march around campus and a 20-minute blockade at the intersection at 19th and Holloway avenues. Students dispersed without incident when ordered to by San Francisco police. "The students made a lot of noise ... and acted appropriately,'' university spokeswoman Christina Holmes said, adding there were no arrests or acts of vandalism.
