Los Angeles Daily News 3-24-04 Music suits include USC, CSUN users |
|
| The recording industry filed a new wave of lawsuits Tuesday against 532 alleged music-sharers, including individuals using computer networks at USC and Cal State Northridge. The copyright lawsuits were filed against "John Does" nationwide, and the Recording Industry Association of America said 89 of the complaints target users of campus networks in 10 states and Washington, D.C. The RIAA did not say how many of the lawsuits were filed in Los Angeles, but John Chandler, a spokesman for California State University, Northridge, said he had been told the RIAA is looking at two computer users on campus. "We have 54,000 computer accounts on campus, 8,000 actual computers and a whole series of policies that make it clear to our employees and our students that trading in copyrighted material is against campus policy and against the law," Chandler said. "The university will go about trying to ensure our students and employees are acting appropriately when they use computer resources, and we'll wait and see what develops with the RIAA's allegations." A spokesman for the University of Southern California did not return phone calls. RIAA President Cary Sherman issued a statement saying the suits are part of a strategy to educate file sharers about the law while protecting copyrights. "Piracy, which is particularly rampant on college campuses, continues to hurt retailers, musicians, producers, record labels and the thousands of less-celebrated individuals involved in making music," Sherman said. "It undermines the ability of the music community to invest in the
great, up-and-coming artists of tomorrow -- a real loss especially for
fans who look for fresh, new music." |
