Former Governor to Lead UCLA Probe

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Former Gov. George Deukmejian will lead an investigation into alleged abuses in UCLA's body parts program.

Deukmejian is heading a University of California task force that will look into allegations that cadavers donated to the university's Willed Body Program were sold for a profit by two employees.

``We will find out what went wrong with the program and we will take action to prevent tragedies of this kind from happening again,'' UCLA President Albert Carnesale told the Board of Regents Thursday.

UCLA suspended its program earlier this month after the director, Henry Reid, was arrested for investigation of dealing in stolen body parts. A body parts dealer, Ernest V. Nelson, who is not affiliated with the university, also was arrested.

Both men are free on bail. Reid and another employee have been placed on unpaid leave.

UCLA officials have alleged Reid sold body parts to Nelson, who resold them to corporations for a profit.
