Chico Enterprise-Record 3-12-04 Chico State student dies from crash injuries |
|
| ROUND MOUNTAIN -- Scott D. Melton, a senior at Chico State University majoring in business, died Friday following a crash in Shasta County Feb. 27. He was 24. Melton was reportedly driving to his parents' home in Round Mountain when he lost control of his 1966 Chevrolet on Highway 299. The California Highway Patrol reported that Melton failed to negotiate a sharp turn and slammed into a tree. He was trapped inside his vehicle when rescuers arrived and had to be extricated. Investigators said speed was a factor in the crash, but noted that drugs and alcohol weren't. He was taken by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Redding with major injuries and died there seven days later. Melton was a first-semester transfer from Humboldt State University, where he was an honor student. He was a native of Redding and was engaged to be married. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Mountain Community
Center in Round Mountain. Chico State officials said a flag will be lowered in the lawn in front
of Kendall Hall in memory of Melton and two other university students
who died in the past week. |
