San Diego Union-Tribune 12-31-03 SDSU student held in officer's death |
|
| A 20-year-old San Diego State University student was arrested yesterday on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana in connection with a crash in Inyo County that killed a California Highway Patrol officer. CHP officials said Carley Crystal was booked into the Inyo County jail. Her hometown was not available. Investigators said Crystal lost control of her sport utility vehicle, which slammed into a CHP car that was stopped on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 395 just north of Kern County. CHP Officer Paul Pino, 49, died at a hospital four hours after the 8:30 a.m. accident, which occurred 10 miles north of Lone Pine. Crystal was not injured in the collision, but two male passengers in her car were hurt, one of them seriously, said CHP spokesman Tom Marshall. Their names were not immediately available. Pino, a 26-year CHP veteran and father of four, was sitting in his patrol car on the freeway shoulder, writing a traffic ticket, when the SUV veered and hit the car, investigators said. Pino's patrol car was pushed into and beneath the three-axle, flatbed truck that he had pulled over, and which was parked in front of him.
