By the year 2010, California State University, Sacramento will have 5,000 students living on campus, high-rise academic buildings, a huge greenbelt, a performing arts center, and 8,000-seat sports and concerts venue. At least, that's President Alexander Gonzalez's plan. Undaunted by a state budget crisis that's cutting into funding for higher education, Gonzalez said Thursday it's time to start planning to transform the commuter school into a "destination campus for the West." "One way or another, we're going to create the standout, flagship campus we know Sac State can be," Gonzalez said in a speech before hundreds of faculty and staff. The California State University board of trustees is scheduled to consider next week whether to approve the plan. Officials declined to name the cost of the plan, but it would likely be hundreds of millions of dollars and would require many donations. Sacramento State has 28,000 students and is the sixth largest school in CSU's 23-campus system.
