San Jose Mercury-News 2-24-04 Wishful Thinking |
|
As the search for a president for San Jose State University enters Round Two, a couple of familiar names have popped up on the wish lists of some Silicon Valley business types: former U.S. Rep. Tom Campbell and former Mercury News Publisher Jay Harris. California State University trustees pulled the plug on the first search in the fall after interviewing three finalists. Both Campbell and Harris have backgrounds in academia and, after successful careers on the outside, are back in the bosom of ivory tower institutions. Campbell is dean of the prestigious Haas School of Business at the University of California-Berkeley; Harris is a professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California. But the high-octane name-dropping may only be wishful thinking. Campbell reports telling a member of SJSU's presidential search committee last year that he didn't want to leave Berkeley. That still goes. ``I'm staying at Berkeley and am pretty happy to be dean of the Haas School,'' he said. Harris, a close friend of former university president Robert Caret, chuckled
at the notion. Having him as the Spartans' No. 1 guy ``would not be the
best thing for the university, the community or me.'' And besides, ``I
love what I'm doing.'' |
