Bartel to continue with SDSU lawsuit
By MIKE SULLIVAN

SAN DIEGO ---- Former equipment manager Steve Bartel will go forward with his civil lawsuit against San Diego State despite the school's decision to reinstate his employment effective Monday, attorney Paul Kondrick confirmed.

Bartel was reinstated when the California State University system elected to drop the case against him during a hearing in front of the State Personnel Board.

Bartel has yet to receive his new job duties from the university's human resources department.

"Mr. Bartel winning the State Personnel Board hearing has no effect on Mr. Bartel pursuing his civil lawsuit in San Diego Superior Court," Kondrick said.

Bartel was fired five months ago based on information in a CSU Chancellor's Office audit of the athletic department. The audit cited a pattern of mismanagement and a system of bartering athletic equipment for personal gain.

Kondrick said the decision to continue legal action wasn't difficult.

"That's the only way at present that Steve Bartel can finally, in a public manner, clear his name," Kondrick said. "There have been a lot of mean-spirited rumors and accusations made against Steve Bartel.

"Steve plans to make sure the truth comes out. And it will."
