University prepares for new library
Administrators vacate longtime offices so building can be razed

Richard Rush, president of California State University, Channel Islands, and other university administrators are settling into new offices this week after moving out of the university's longtime administration building to make room for a new library.

Employees from the president's office, finance and administration, human resources and advancement have moved across University Drive to a refurbished space in the north quad of the campus.

The old administration building served as administrative headquarters for Camarillo State Hospital before the hospital closed and was taken over by the university. It will be torn down later this summer so construction can get under way on the university's library, said university spokeswoman Peggy Hinz

The $38 million John S. Broome Library, designed by world-renowned architect Lord Norman Foster, will be built around the former hospital and intake building, which sits behind the old administration building.

The hospital and intake center will undergo major renovation for the transformation into a library. Plans call for the new building to extend out into the space of the existing administration building and toward the tree-lined mall that runs down the center of the campus

The library, expected to be a centerpiece on the campus, will take two to three years to build once construction begins, Hinz said. The university is seeking bids for the construction work.

The new administration building is on the north side of the center mall, directly across from the Bell Tower building. University officials spent about $2.3 million to renovate 21,000 square feet of space that will house administrative offices and conference rooms, Hinz said.

The new location is expected to be the permanent site of the administrative offices. A new parking lot, which includes visitor parking, has been constructed in a courtyard space behind the new administration building.
