The Oregonian 4-7-04 Jarvis is a finalist for San Jose State job |
|
| Richard Jarvis, who announced his resignation last week as the chancellor of the Oregon university system, is one of two finalists for the presidency of San Jose State University. Jarvis resigned effective June 30 after less than two years in the post. Jarvis said that he and Gov. Ted Kulongoski's new appointees to the State Board of Higher Education -- a different group from the board who hired Jarvis in 2002 -- agreed that he was no longer the right person for the job. Details of his monetary settlement with the board have not been released. San Jose State, part of the 23-campus California State University system, announced its finalists Tuesday. The other finalist is Paul Yu, president of the State University of New York College at Brockport. A news release said Jarvis will visit the campus next week. CSU trustees will interview the finalists April 19 and will name the president soon after. Jarvis was chancellor of Nevada's university and community college system and founder of an online university before coming to Oregon. When he offered his resignation, he said he wanted to stay in the West and would pursue a university presidency as a means of getting closer to campus issues than is possible in a system chancellor's role. Former Gov. Neil Goldschmidt, president of the State Board of Higher Education, has said the board may not begin the search for a new chancellor for six months to a year, after the board redefines the job and gets legislators' approval of a new administrative structure. |
