New set of finalists for San Jose State president

SAN JOSE -- For the second time since last fall San Jose State University will get a chance to look at a slate of finalists seeking to fill the campus president's chair.

Tuesday the California State University announced Paul Yu, president of State University of New York College at Brockport; and Richard S. Jarvis, chancellor of Oregon University System, had been named finalists to replace President Bob Caret, who resigned last summer to take the president's post at Towson University in Maryland.

This is the second set of finalists for the San Jose job.

Last October the California State University announced Judith A. Ramaley, associate director, education and human resources, National Science Foundation; Gregory L. O'Brien, chancellor, University of New Orleans; and Sheila I. Kaplan, president emerita, Metropolitan State College of Denver, had been selected for the short list of presidential candidates.

However, after coming to the Silicon Valley campus to meet with faculty, staff, and students, the State University trustees "agreed to extend the search for a new president," according to a press release issued Nov. 20.

The current finalists are scheduled to visit the San Jose campus next week for separate meetings with faculty, staff, students, public and the press.

Since 2002 presidents have been replaced at six of the 23-CSU campuses.

Chico State's new President Paul J. Zingg took over in February. Other campuses that got new presidents in the last two years are Humboldt State University, Cal Poly-Pomona, San Marcos State University, and Sacramento State University.
