Cal to raise summer school fees by 15%
Carrie Sturrock

Summer session fees at UC Berkeley will increase approximately 15 percent to help offset budget cuts.

Undergraduates will pay an additional flat fee of $150 plus the normal per unit charge of $166.

Graduates will pay an additional $220 plus the per unit charge of $217. The increase will not affect visiting students, said Gary Penders, director of summer sessions.

The flat fee is charged regardless of how many units a student takes. The average summer course load is six units so the fee increase averages out to about 15 percent for both undergraduates and graduates.

UC Berkeley enrolls about 11,000 UC students during the summer and 3,000 visiting students.

Students who wish to cancel their enrollment in summer sessions because of the fee increase should withdraw and request a full refund by April 16. Students on summer financial aid and graduate students funded by the graduate division will not have to pay the increase.
