Long Beach Press-Telegram 4-2-04 Students to foot bill for CSU degrees |
|
| CAMARILLO -- Hit hard by the shrinking state budget, Ventura County's new university is adding two new graduate degrees business and education with a hitch: Students must pay the entire tab. The self-supporting degree programs will be offered next year at Cal State Channel Islands. Students will pay $450 a unit to pursue a master's of business administration and $295 a unit for a master's of education. The university initially announced that an enrollment cap to reduce state spending would stall creation of new academic programs for at least a year. In an effort to meet local needs, however, it was decided the new degree programs would be launched as soon as possible by moving to a system where the programs would pay for themselves. Students in the self- supporting programs, at six units a semester, will
pay $2,700 for the business master and $1,770 for the education master.
In comparison, graduate students in the Cal State system typically pay
a state- subsidized fee of $504 a semester for six units or less. |
