Modesto Bee 4-25-04 Letters to the Editor: Article downplays honesty |
|
|
I feel the article "Honesty is a forgotten policy" (Page A-1, April 19) was highly unjust to the majority of students who do not cheat. While some students may feel they are "entitled" to certain grades, the majority knows that we need to earn the grade. The article downplayed the idea that "faculty members agree the majority of students earn their degrees legitimately." As for the notion that reports of academic dishonesty are increasing in the CSU system, there is also a rise in the number of students attending and the article does not rule out this correlation. While cell phones can be used for cheating, there is no instructor I know of on campus who allows cell phones in class during a test. As a final remark, the definition of citing sources, which is so crucial to avoid plagiarizing, is to include enough information that the reader can go directly to the source with minimal searching. Previous Bee articles have lacked this. SHANNON POLUGAR Turlock |
