Letters to the Editor: Dedicated to education at CSUS

In regard to the article, "Honesty is a forgotten policy" (Page A-1, April 19): I want to present the other side. Amy Andes, a librarian at California State University, Stanislaus, is quoted as saying, "It is increasingly rare to find a student who commits completely to the process and practice of earning a college degree."

How disheartening. I am completely committed to my education. I understand that cheating is on the rise, but I did not see it while attending Stanislaus State. My classmates were people like myself, who knew the value of gaining an education and were willing to work for it.

I had the privilege of taking a class with Janet Towell. She, along with others, started the Abundant Books for Children program. It pays for books that are mailed each month to any child in Turlock under 5 years old ("Free book program for kids turns pages, heads," Page B-1, April 19). Graduate students under Professor Towell have developed lesson plans for the 72 book titles offered. These are the kinds of people I encountered at Stanislaus State -- people who want to use their education to make a difference.
