| San Jose State University has a new president: Paul Yu, currently president at the State University of New York's College at Brockport. Trustess of the California State University announced Yu's selection this morning. He and a second finalist, Richard S. Jarvis, chancellor of Oregon University System, were interviewed Monday in Los Angeles, a week after both had visited the campus. The new president will start July 15. Yu, 62, who immigated as a boy with his family from China, said he was delighted to be selected and would draw on his experiences in a variety of public institutions to lead San Jose State. ``The general direction for the university is clear: SJSU must continue to honor its mission as a public university by supporting quality and access,'' Yu said in a statement. ``But within that broad scope there are many choices to be made regarding the university's goals and strategies. This is why SJSU should plan carefully for the future.'' Bill Hauck, chairman of the board, said Yu would be ``a remarkable president. He will provide the leadership to chart the future course of the campus and the visison to expand its academic reputation. He is a scholar and a proven leader who has left a legacy of accomplishmenbts at three distinguished universities.'' Yu, a philosopher, has been president since 1997 at Brockport, a campus of 8,500 students. Before that he held high-ranking administrative positions at private Butler University in Indianpolis and at Central Mighigan University. He will take over from interim president Joseph Crowley, who will have served for a year by the time of Yu's arrival. Crowley stepped in when former president Robert Caret accepted the presidency of Townson University in Maryland. |
