San Diego Union-Tribune 4-16-04 SDSU Students Reject Fee Earmarked to Aid Athletics |
|
| SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State students narrowly voted down the $80 fee referendum that would have given athletics and academic affairs a $4.8 million boost. Athletic Director Mike Bohn said late last night that the initiative failed by 152 votes. It was unclear how many students participated in the vote. The accompanying $16 fee referendum to build an on-campus aquatics complex passed by a large margin, according to Bohn. The next move belongs to SDSU President Stephen Weber, who has it in his power to overturn the student vote and initiate the $80-per-semester fee. Weber had spoken in favor of the fee hike and those opposing the fee proposal feared beforehand that Weber would override the students' vote. The referendum had been supported by most major groups on campus, including
the Associated Student Council, the Faculty Senate and the California
Faculty Association. |
