Artist sought for Fresno State statue

Fresno State is looking for the right artist to create a bronze sculpture of Jane Addams, the first woman to be honored in the campus Peace Garden.

California State University, Fresno, officials hope to install the new statue by fall.

Addams was a social worker and the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1931. An elementary school in the Fresno Unified School District bears her name.

Jeannine Raymond, university human resources director and co-chairwoman of the Peace Garden steering committee, said the group worked a year to choose Addams from a group of 25 female nominees.

Paul Beare, dean of education and chairman of the selection subcommittee, said nominations ranged from radical to traditional.

Some of the names on the list: Eleanor Roosevelt, Mother Teresa, Amelia Earhart, Fannie Lou Hamer and Lady Diana Spencer, who became Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Peace Garden's present statues honor Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Raymond said the Addams statue will be paid for with private donations, like others in the Peace Garden. Depending on design, the new statue probably will cost between $70,000 and $90,000.

The idea of adding a woman to the Peace Garden became a goal two years ago, Raymond said, when a friend challenged her, asking why the Peace Garden recognized men only.

The steering committee is seeking design applications from Fresno State students, faculty and alumni.
