County may tackle fiscal challenges with new partnerships
By James Tressler

EUREKA -- Humboldt County supervisors on Tuesday will review a proposed collaboration between the county, Humboldt State University, College of the Redwoods, the county Office of Education and the Humboldt Area Foundation.

The agencies have been talking since May about working together to address challenges each faces in competing for increasingly scarce sources of money.

The board Tuesday will review a draft memorandum of understanding, which will formalize the county's commitment to the team effort. Each party has its own committees working on the collaboration, with Supervisors John Woolley and Bonnie Neely representing the county.

"We want to create a collaboration so that we are more competitive and able to reduce competitiveness locally for funds that are becoming more rare -- to help with a combination of workforce development and economic development throughout the area," Woolley said Friday.

In other news, the board is expected to approve formal responses to the 2002-2003 grand jury report, which was released earlier this summer. The grand jury, a court-appointed government watchdog, monitors conditions in all county government departments, as well as investigates citizens' complaints.
