Cal State Computer Spending Assailed
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

IN BRIEF / SACRAMENTO

Two lawmakers called for California State University to halt spending on its controversial computer system and to redirect $50 million for the project to student services.

The two Democratic state legislators — Sen. Richard Alarcon of Sylmar and Assemblyman Manny Diaz of San Jose — have accused the 23-campus Cal State system of squandering money on the computer project.

In March, California Auditor Elaine M. Howle issued a report declaring that Cal State's management software system is expected to cost $662 million, $200 million more than was estimated four years ago.
