Hayward Review 5-15-03 San Jose State chooses new president |
|
| The retired president of the University of Nevada, Reno, will lead San Jose State University on an interim basis when current President Robert Caret leaves this summer. Joseph Crowley, 69, will make $222,450 a year when he takes over on July 1, California State University trustees decided Tuesday. He replaces Caret, who leaves the 30,000-student campus to become president of Towson University in Maryland. Caret led SJSU for eight years. Crowley was president of the state university in Reno from 1978 until his retirement in 2000. He has continued to teach and participates in other university activities, according to the CSU office of public affairs. Crowley was one of three interim presidents CSU trustees named Tuesday. The board also selected Roy McTarnaghan, former president of Florida Gulf Coast University, as interim president at CSU San Marcos, and tapped CSU Chico Provost Scott McNall to take over on an interim basis when that campus's president retires this summer. Salary was set at $208,000 annually for McTarnaghan and McNall, whose appointments begin July 1. Searches for permanent presidents for the three campuses should be completed by the end of the year. Also Tuesday, the board set the salaries for incoming presidents at two other campuses. CSU Sacramento's new president, Alexander Gonzalez, will make $221,004 annually and receive an $36,804 annual housing allowance, and incoming Cal Poly Pomona President J. Michael Ortiz will make $205,008 annually and will live in the presidential residence on campus.
