Stanford will address workplace complaints
By Michelle Maitre

Stanford University President John Hennessy announced Tuesday that he will form a committee to review workplace policies as students marked the one-week anniversary of a hunger strike to protest labor conditions.

Students expected to meet late Tuesday with Hennessy for another negotiation session, but the announcement didn't immediately cause students to end their fast.

"President Hennessy and senior administrators have met with protesting students on an ongoing basis over the last week, and we were hopeful that they would join us in announcing this proposal," said Gordon Earle, the university's vice president for public affairs. "Regrettably, at this juncture, they have chosen not to."

Six members of the student-led Stanford Labor Action Coalition haven't eaten since May 28 to draw attention to what they say is a need for a comprehensive labor policy on campus. The students want the university to begin the process for drafting such a policy, called a code of conduct, that would offer all employees living wages and the right to organize, among other things.
