CSUSM to award full ride to top-flight student

SAN MARCOS ----- Nearly $54,000 raised at a silent auction the University Ball in March has been earmarked for a four-year scholarship, the first of what Cal State San Marcos aims to provide to promising students from the region, the university has announced.

The first recipient is to be chosen from among members of the class of 2003 at high schools in California who graduated with a 3.75 average, which is nearly straight As, or who ranked in the top 5 percent of their class.

Applicants for the award, the Presidential Scholarship, must also already be accepted for fall admission to Cal State San Marcos. Some $13,000 a year would be awarded the student to cover fees, books and an amount that would allow for living expenses at the new University Village housing complex on the campus.

The scholars will be asked to become involved in community activities such as promoting higher education among students in middle schools and high schools, serving on university committees and working with student organizations.
