Bakersfield Californian 6-29-03 Editorial: UC system: 'What, me worry?' |
|
| The budget crisis does not concern the University of California Board of Regents. It awarded a raise and bonus to Senior Vice President Joseph Mullinix, raising his salary from $291,900 to $370,000. Meanwhile, UC officials describe their financial situation as "desperate." Students will pay increased fees of 25 percent and see programs and services cut. UC is also considering layoffs. The raise may be deserved, but it is insensitive to offer such an exorbitant amount when the college is struggling. It smacks of a "let them eat cake" attitude that has become synonymous with the UC system and is tarnishing California's once sterling education reputation.
