Main Library set to shutter its facility in preparation for move to new SJSU site
Branches to take break for system upgrades

A week of "lasts" is about to arrive at the old Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Main Library, which closes its doors as a center for learning at 9 p.m. on June 30, reopening a month later in a new home.

All branch libraries will close from July 4 to 8 for installation of a new electronic catalog.

The main library will reopen Aug. 1, part of the new shared facility on the San Jose State University campus -- the new Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Main Library, an eight-story, $177.5 million building that combines the collections and operations of the city and university libraries.

Meanwhile, today is the last day for patrons to place online requests for materials from any library location until a new computer system begins operating in July. Thursday is the last day for patrons to specify a new pickup location for requests for material that have not yet been filled.

All San Jose library branches will close for five days starting July 4 for conversion to an automated system that will give library users electronic access to the combined holdings of the city and university. Book drops will remain open. Telephone renewal will not be available until after the new computer system is in place.

The new library's grand opening celebration begins with its midday dedication Aug. 16 at the corner of San Fernando and Fourth streets.

The old library building will be used temporarily for city offices until completion of the new City Hall, located off Santa Clara Street, a block from the new library.
