SJSU to expand campus smoking ban

San Jose State University will inaugurate a new, stricter campus smoking policy this fall.

At a news conference Tuesday, students who pushed for the change and officials from the American Lung Association put campus visitors on notice that smoking will be banned within 25 feet of the windows and doors of all campus buildings. Under the old rules, it was prohibited within 15 feet.

Because the buildings are so close, the new policy would largely eliminate smoking on campus. But enforcement is a concern, said senior Karis Bituin. Before, it has been undertaken only if someone complains.

As a representative of COUGH -- Campus Organized and United for Good Health -- Bituin said she has notified the university police department of the policy change. Last year, the group persuaded California State University trustees to allow individual campuses to set their own smoking policies.

The stricter policy is just one step for COUGH. ``Hopefully by 2005, San Jose State will be completely non-smoking,'' Bituin said.
