Los Angeles Daily News 6-10-03 NCAA investigates CSUN |
|
| Cal State Northridge is under investigation by the NCAA for an academic rules violation within the men's basketball program, according to sources. Athletic director Dick Dull confirmed the NCAA is conducting an investigation, which sources say centers on junior-college transfer John Clark. NCAA officials were on campus last week conducting interviews. Administrators in the kinesiology department detected problems with two of Clark's classes and reported them, the sources said. The school then reported the possible violations to the NCAA last month. "This has been at the highest levels of the university and our position is not to comment until (the investigation) is concluded," Dull said. President Jolene Koester referred comment to Dull through a university spokesman, and Dull referred to a university-released statement. NCAA spokesman Jeff Howard said the NCAA would not confirm the investigation. After the investigation is concluded, the university has the opportunity to respond to the findings. If an infraction is deemed major, the Division I infractions committee has a hearing and the NCAA releases its findings after a ruling is made. CSUN was eligible May 31 to come off three years of probation for numerous rules violations within the football program. Paul Bubb, the athletic director at the time of the infractions, had resigned before the investigation concluded and then-coach Ron Ponciano was fired. One assistant basketball coach and two assistant coaches from other sports are involved in the basketball investigation, according to sources, and were interviewed by the NCAA last week. Clark was ruled ineligible by CSUN on Jan. 27. As the Matadors basketball team was about to leave for a game at Cal State Fullerton, Clark was pulled off the team bus. Faculty athletic representative Barbara Swerkes had learned Clark was ineligible and informed Dull and the coaching staff. Clark didn't play the rest of the season, and it's unclear whether he will be eligible to play next year, his senior season. This investigation is one of several rules issues CSUN is facing this year. The school recently concluded an internal investigation after volleyball player J.P. Jandreau informed the school of problems in the volleyball program. In a letter to Jandreau, Dull said he would oversee changes in several areas, including consumption of alcohol on the road by players and coaches, treatment of athletes during the recruiting process and hazing. And last week, CSUN's Jerrick Holmes was stripped of his NCAA title in the high jump and was ruled ineligible for 365 days.
