Area student to receive school award from state

One South Bay student is among two Los Angeles-area students and six people statewide selected for this year’s William R. Hearst/California State University Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement.

Sheba Kane of California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson and Shannon Starr of California State University, Northridge will be honored July 15 at the CSU’s Board of Trustees meeting.

Kane, who recently earned her bachelor’s degree in African studies, is an English as a Second Language teacher. Starr, a linguistics major, is nationally certified as a deaf interpreter and is hoping to become a university professor.

The systemwide award provides $3,000 scholarships to students who have demonstrated superior academic performance and outstanding volunteer community service, CSU officials said.

The recipient must have overcome profound personal challenges to achieve academic success, officials said. The awards are funded by the CSU Board of Trustees and an endowment the Hearst Foundation created.
