Hayward Review 7-29-03 Campus undergoes telecommunications renovation |

HAYWARD -- The roadblocks at Cal State Hayward this summer may be a pain, but they are for a good cause. The roadwork, which deals with underground pipes, is part of the campus's $14.45 million telecommunications renovation started two years ago. Hayward's upgrade is one aspect of a $270 million state-funded project to modernize the computer and other communication systems of the 23-campus California State University system. The project was divided into two stages. The first stage, which has been completed, involved installa tion of a new phone system. That cost $1.65 million. The second stage, which started in June, represents the bulk of the <001 . 0000.03> work. This stage, costing $12.8 million, tackles the university's data and video networks. More specifically, the upgrades will improve the In ternet connection, distance-learning capabilities and the campus televi sion station. "Students and faculty and anyone who uses the system will be able to do more work faster," said Tom Manley, the project manager. In addition, new computer labs will be remodeled and old ones will be renovated, for a total of 80. The main inconveniences for staff and students will last throughout the summer. By the end of August the crew will begin cabling every room, working at night, Manley said. The cable and network systems will run between and within buildings. Every room with a telephone and a computer will be rewired as well.
