San Francisco Chronicle/7-18-03 Letter: GRADUATED UC FEES |
|
| Editor -- Re "State's university students facing new
25-30% fee increases this fall," (July 17).
There is perhaps a more equitable system than simply increasing tuition and imposing a surcharge on students whose parents make more than $90,000 a year. Along with those measures, for instance, the UC Regents could vote to impose a graduated surcharge on the salary on any UC administrator making more than $90, 000, topping out at 25 percent or 30 percent of the salaries of the most highly paid administrators. This surcharge, too, could be discontinued when better times return. Over the past few years, UC has given large salary increases to some of its most high-ranking administrators. This includes the recent $79,000 per year raise (on top of his $291,000 yearly salary) to Vice President for Business and Finance Joseph Mullinix. His raise necessitated a large salary increase for the UC president as well.
