Press-Enterprise 8-28-03 College center plan is topic in Temecula |
|
| Plans to build a multiuse college facility on city-owned land gained momentum during a closed-door Temecula City Council review Tuesday night. "I'm very proud that we've put a package together for our citizens and the surrounding area," Mayor Jeff Stone said after the meeting. Stone said the council embraced the plan, but closed-session secrecy rules prevented him from elaborating on the issues discussed. Any city deal with AGK Group, a development company preparing a feasibility plan for the 32-acre Temecula Education Complex, must be reviewed by the council in open session before a vote can be cast. Plans call for the complex to include a conference center, stores, five-story classroom buildings, 260 apartments, campus offices and a 24-hour day-care center. The complex at the northern end of Diaz Road would bring Mount San Jacinto Community College, Cal State San Marcos and UC Riverside classes together under one roof. Those three institutions currently offer classes in Temecula, but they are scattered over four locations that cannot handle any more students. Stone said more than 6,000 students would attend classes at the new center. Fifty of the apartments would be reserved for low-income residents for at least 50 years, he said. Stone, AGK representatives and college officials will detail the plan for the Southwest Riverside County Economic Development Commission at a luncheon meeting today at Temecula Creek Inn. A public vote by the council may come in October. Approval by the governing boards of the participating colleges also would be required before the plan could move forward.
