Bakersfield Californian 8-20-03 Letters: University pay contained |
|
|
The recent Californian editorial "Share the pain equitably" contained a significant error of the facts. You stated, "In the CSU system, presidents received raises and allowance increases at a time students are being denied admission during the spring quarter and face fee hikes that have no rational relationship to inflation or to improved institutional quality." This is not accurate. During this time of reduction in budgets, great care has been taken by the CSU to minimize the effects of budget cuts upon our students. In a recent memorandum from Chancellor Charles Reed to all CSU employees, the chancellor states, "The CSU had anticipated deep cuts and had been planning for many months to manage these reductions with the least possible impact to students and employees. We made such cuts as eliminating or freezing 2,300 vacant positions, freezing salaries for management employees and executives and by reducing the Chancellor's Office budget by $4.5 million." Your editorial is in error and misleading concerning the approach taken by the CSU to the budget and our responsibility to serve our students. Your readers and the people we serve deserve accurate information in editorials, as well as in news reporting. W. MICHAEL CHERTOK, Vice President, University Advancement, Cal State
