UC Berkeley workshops
take aim at sex harassment |
|
| UC Berkeley began beefing up its response to sexual-harassment
Tuesday with the first of several workshops designed to teach employees
how to deal with accusations.
Tuesday's presentation to deans and department heads kicked off several new awareness campaigns for administrators and teachers that take effect this year. All school employees will be encouraged to attend a training session this year, but administrators have stopped short of requiring attendance. The changes follow last year's resignation of John Dwyer, dean of the university's Boalt Hall law school, after accusations of sexual misconduct by a former student. He was never charged with a crime and said the single incident was consensual. Among the instructional methods available to employees is a new Web site that includes descriptions of state and federal harassment laws and campus rules and explains how to deal with a variety of situations. Robert Berring, the interim Boalt Hall dean who took over for Dwyer last year, attended the workshop and said employees are optimistic about the effects of the campaign. "I think everybody wants to be as clear as possible on what the rules are and how we obey them," he said. "I think it really is important that people feel comfortable here, and part of that is knowing what the rules are." |
