Judy Belk, vice president of global affairs for Levi Strauss & Co., has been elected to chair the Cal State Hayward Educational Foundation Board of Directors at California State University, Hayward.
She will preside over a 33-member board that has responsibility for a $5.7 million endowment, funding scholarships and other projects on behalf of the university.
Belk earned her master's degree in public administration from CSUH in 1978. She was honored as the university's 1999 Alum of the Year and was the keynote speaker at commencement ceremonies in June.
In addition to being responsible for Levi Strauss' global communications, community affairs and government relations, Belk oversees corporate social responsibility and community involvement for the company, which is the world's largest apparel manufacturer. As vice president of the Levi Strauss Foundation, with assets of more than $115 million, she administers a social investment program targeting issues such as AIDS, community-based economic development and racism.
She serves on the national board of directors for Independent Sector, a coalition promoting volunteerism and giving. She also serves on the Community and Public issues Council of the Conference Board and volunteers with the Conciliation Forum of Oakland, a community mediation service.
"Judy Belk is an outstanding representative of this university," said CSUH President Norma Rees. "We are grateful for her continued support of Cal State Hayward, her understanding of higher education issues, and her commitment to public service and higher education."
Belk was elected to chair the foundation by a vote of the board on Sept. 24 and succeeds John Hunter, president of Industrial Boxboard Corp. of Hayward.
