Stockton Elementary Students Take Part In Arts Camp

A group of elementary school students from the Stockton Union School District who are considered "at risk" are participating in a new Summer Arts Camp at California State University, Stanislaus-Stockton.

The camp is being conducted by students and faculty from the University's new School of Fine and Performing Arts, made possible by funding from the San Joaquin County Department of Health and Human Services. Some 45 fourth through sixth grade students participate in art, music and drama activities on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. Student coordinator Cheryl Gorton, a CSU Stanislaus music major, said guest artists do presentations and students are familiarized with a variety of arts, including musical instruments.

"This is a nice opportunity for elementary students who would not normally have this opportunity to have exposure to the arts," said Dr. James Klein, CSU Stanislaus Associate Dean of the College of Arts, Letters and Sciences.

A final production art show featuring student participation is scheduled for Friday, August 11 at 2 p.m. in Bertha Knowles Auditorium at CSU Stanislaus-Stockton.
