Campus: Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo -- June 16, 2000
High School, Community College
Students To Study Energy at Cal Poly
Seventy-five selected high school and community college
students and teachers from San Luis Obispo County, Santa
Maria and Bakersfield will learn about the energy industry
this summer in a special program at Cal Poly.
And it's free for all participants: Texaco and Enron Wind
Corp. are paying all costs.
The first session of the second annual Mechanical
Engineering Energy Institute will meet next week (June
18-23) with the first 28 students. Later sessions will be
June 25-30 and July 9 to 14.
With class presentations, lab experiments, a field trip
-- the first one is to Texaco's Kern River oil field at
Bakersfield -- and other activities, students and teachers
will learn about the current state and future of energy
sources, conservation and use. The week will cover fossil
fuel, geothermal energy, fuel cells and photovoltaics as
well as solar, wind and hydrogen energy.
For more information about the workshops, call Cal Poly
mechanical engineering professor and program director Masoud
Mehdizadeh, (805) 756-1345.
NOTE TO EDITORS: News coverage of the workshops is
invited. The best picture possibilities will be during lab
sessions (generally 10:30 a.m.-noon and 3-5 p.m.) and on
field trips. A solar-powered bicycle will be tested on
Thursdays. For information on specific activities, call
professor Mehdizadeh (805) 756-1345. A schedule appears
below.
