SJSU Student Named Nursing Student of the Year by California Nursing Association Region 10

San Josť State University nursing student Faina Sherman has been named the Student Nurse of the Year by the California Nurses Association, Region 10. The award honors an outstanding graduating student from each registered nursing program within the region who has demonstrated academic and clinical excellence, and leadership skills among peers and in the community.

Sherman of San Josť (Zip code: 95138), who was recently honored at SJSU's commencement program as one of two outstanding graduating seniors, maintained a GPA of 3.91 while working fulltime as a registered nurse. She has been recognized for outstanding leadership in SJSU's California Nursing Students Association. Sherman has received numerous academic honors and awards, including the 1999 Fellowship Leadership Program Award from the Helen Fuld Health Trust Award for her outstanding leadership. She was one of 21 National Awardees (selected from 520 applicants) and the only applicant accepted from California for leadership workshops in New York and London. Sherman has served as a tutor and peer mentor, helping culturally and linguistically diverse students to succeed in the nursing program. She has also volunteered for the American Red Cross, the Diabetes Society of Santa Clara and the City Team Ministries Shelter. Sherman is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
