Graphic Communication Professor Receives National Award

Cal Poly Graphic Communication Professor Philip Ruggles was awarded the 1999 Edwin S. Wise Award by the Graphic Arts Sales Foundation for outstanding contributions in marketing and sales education for the printing, publishing and allied industries.

Ruggles is known nationally as the author of "Printing Estimating: Costing Methods for Digital and Traditional Graphic Imaging," now in its fourth edition.

He has also written numerous articles and presented papers at seminars and led workshops at graphic arts conventions and professional meetings across the country. He has served as an expert witness and industry consultant for many years, covering graphic arts marketing and sales issues, pricing, costing, estimating, computer information systems for printing and publishing companies, graphic arts industry practices, continuous improvement methods, and digital and traditional workflow methods.

In 1986 he was awarded one of three Cal Poly Distinguished Teaching Awards for excellence. Ruggles, who coordinates the Graphic Communication Department's printing and imaging management concentration, has been teaching at Cal Poly since 1971. He lives in San Luis Obispo.

Dick Gorelick, a leading industry consultant, made a special trip to San Luis Obispo to present Ruggles the award on behalf of the Graphic Arts Sales Foundation, an industry education and training group.

The Graphic Arts Sales Foundation is a not-for-profit national trade organization located in West Chester, Pa. It provides industry-specific publications and seminars to educate key graphic arts management and marketing staff members , sales representatives, customer service representatives and estimating staff members.
