Cal State L.A. is Rated One of the Top 25 U.S. Colleges for Hispanics

Hispanic Magazine has ranked California State University, Los Angeles thirteenth among the top 25 U.S. colleges that offer excellent education for Hispanics. The listing included universities such as UC Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, UCLA and sister CSU campuses San Francisco State and San Diego State.

Cal State L.A. is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, with 47 percent of the University's students identifying themselves as Hispanic. A majority of Cal State L.A.'s Hispanic students are majoring in child development, education, criminal justice and psychology.

According to the Hispanic Magazine, the March 2000 list of the top 25 colleges and universities for Hispanics lists institutions that are succeeding in recruiting and retaining Hispanic students. In order to be considered for the list, the colleges needed to show that their student bodies were reflective of the overall U.S. population of Hispanics, which Hispanic Magazine quotes at about 10 percent. Academic excellence as well as the number of Latinos graduating from the colleges was considered, since it indicates the retention of Latinos at the various colleges. Other criteria included the number of Hispanic-related degree programs, Hispanic student organizations, recruiting and minority support programs, and Hispanic faculty.

It also noted: "Because it has such an obvious impact on an individual's standard of living, getting a college education can be critical for many Latino youth. Latinos' success in higher education will also help determine the future prosperity of the United States as a whole, since Hispanics will soon make up the nation's largest minority group."
