Cal State Fullerton's Model United Nations Wins Big in Chicago
Cal State Fullerton students won three major awards at the recent American
Model United Nations conference in Chicago, including the Overall Best Delegation
Award.
A team of 12 students representing Malaysia received the Overall Best Delegation
Award. The students and their cities of residence are: Rashad Aldabagh of
Anaheim, a political science major; Jani Ranasinghe of
Bellflower, a political science major; Sarah Tirado of
Calexico, a political science major; Lora Babilo of
Cypress, a criminal justice major; Katherine Garcia of
Diamond Bar, an international business major; Brenda Gonzalez
of Fullerton, a political science major; Ibeth Carcamo of
Garden Grove, a political science major; Marwan Sbaita of
Lake Forest, a political science major; Philip Vasquez of
Placentia, a human services major; Drew Wiley of
San Diego, a political science major; Sylvie Widjaja of
Walnut, a political science major; and David Kilgo of
Yorba Linda, a political science major.
In addition, Sbaita and Ranasinghe won the Outstanding Delegation Award for
Third Committee General Assembly, representing Malaysia. Carcamo and Kilgo were
awarded the Outstanding Delegation Award for Sixth Committee General Assembly,
representing Malaysia.
Choudhury Shamim, associate professor of political science and a former UN
delegate for Bangladesh, is the adviser to the university's Model United Nations
Club. "This was our first time at the American Model UN Conference held in
Chicago every year in November," said Shamim. "We have created an excellent image
of our university among the MUN staff members and the 1,200 college delegates who
participated at the conference, coming from all over the United States."
