California State University Channel Islands to
Hold Historic Inaugural Commencement
California State University Channel Islands will once again make history
when the first public, four-year university in Ventura County holds
its inaugural commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 23. Speaking
during this historic event will be Debra S. Farar, chair of the California
State University Board of Trustees. Cal State Channel Islands is the
only public, four-year university to open nationally in 2002, admitting
its first students last fall.
"This commencement is truly an inspiring benchmark for the University,"
said Richard R. Rush, University president. "This event marks the
end of a year of tremendous growth and achievement for Cal State Channel
Islands. It also joyfully throws the spotlight on the first of many
students who wanted to, and finally could, earn a degree from their
local University."
The first three students to graduate with degrees from Cal State Channel
Islands as well as the first 16 to graduate from the university's teaching
credential program will be recognized in an outdoor ceremony at the
newest CSU campus. They will join with more than 800 graduating students
who have completed their studies through CSUN at the Cal State Channel
Islands campus. More than 400 of that group have signaled their intent
to participate in the commencement ceremony.
*Media who plan to cover commencement should RSVP to 437-8947 to receive
a media parking pass.
